Mat roars into richest lane

A VIRTUALLY unknown motorcyclist has zoomed into the prestigious money pot of Australia's sporting elite, millions of dollars ahead of household names such as Shane Warne.
Alongside the enormous pay packets of icons such as golfer Greg Norman and soccer player Harry Kewell, six-time AMA Superbike Championship winner Mat Mladin made $7 million this year to make him No. 9 with a bullet in his debut on the 2006 BRW Top Sports Earners List.

Queenslander Norman, now a businessman who plays golf occasionally, took pole position for the 10th year in a row with estimated earnings of $20 million for 2006.

Mladin, 34, who finished second in the Superbike championship this year, also derives income from a large contract with Suzuki and a motorcycle product importing business.

His proud father Mate Mladin was not surprised at his son's ranking.

"I was wondering when he was going to come on the list," Mr Mladin told The Courier-Mail last night from his NSW home.

"I've expected it for a while. Mat still loves the sport now more than when I bought him his first motorcycle for his fourth birthday."

Just behind Mladin on the top earners' list was another debutant, boxer Anthony Mundine, who placed 10th with earnings of $6.25 million during the year, thanks largely to his fight against Danny Green in May.

Socceroo Kewell beat eight of his teammates who also featured on the list to claim second spot behind Norman with $12.5 million.

Golf still appears to be the source of the big winners, with 14 players in the top 50. With $10.3 million, Adam Scott ranked third, while Queenslander Karrie Webb was the highest ranked female at No. 18 with $3.1 million.

Queensland tennis player Samantha Stosur's $1.3 million income gave her 46th spot on the list.

MVs at Daytona: All Stop

The early buzz from the MV Agusta Superbike effort here at Daytona has suffered a blown amplifier.

The engine in the bike being ridden by MV factory rider Luca Scassa popped on the front banking this morning at 10:45 AM. Both of Scassa's bikes are now back in the Daytona garage while Ferracci's crew repairs or replaces.

Earlier another of Scassa's machines suffered an injured transmission.

Ferracci said that the engines he has for this test are essentially Superstock-spec in Superbike chassis.

Nou ik zal verslag uitbrengen van de dag hier..
Luca had nogal een gigantische pechdag!
Na de eerste 2 rondes, Luca blies inderdaad zijn blok op... MAMMA MIA! Met een gigantisch gat in het blok als resultaat..
Na een pauze was het dan weer zo ver en na 2 rondes kwam Luca weer binnen.. Met een achterband.
De derder keer was het nog geen hele ronde toen de pech weer toe sloeg. Dit keer een highsider met als gevolg 2 gebroken middenvoetsbeentjes.
Einde test en veel pijn... :'(
