Afgelopen weekend in het bijprogramma op Phillip Island ook de 1e races voor het Aussie kamp. Er waren 3 races gepland, de 3e werd vanwege het weer gecancelled. Omdat topic beetje levendig te houden maar even de uitslagen:

Giles met de Suzuki stond op de pole met een tijd van 1.35,033. Anthony Gobert vertrok vanaf de 12e plaats (1.37,086), in race 1 kwam hij als 8e over de finish maar werd uit de uitslag geschrapt, vermoedelijk wegens onreglementaire remschijven.

Gobert staat met 8 punten op de 17e plaats

Josh Brookes, na 1 weekend de leider in het kampioenschap. Brookes was de man die vorig jaar op een dealer Honda met Pirelli's (waarmee hij niet bekend was dacht ik) als wildcard de Supersport 600 WK race op Phillip Island won.

Nou, dealer-honda was volgens mij niet helemaal waar hoor. Volgens mij was het wel zo dat ze wat steun van HRC kregen.

Aussie eyes overseas series
THE motorcycle racer in line to be Australia's next international star has one eye on this weekend's national championship rounds in Sydney and the other on an overseas foray.

Josh Brookes, who turned 22 today, leads both the superbike and supersports championships going into the second round at Eastern Creek.

But a potentially bigger prize for the latest ace from the Australian production line of two-wheel whizzes is the prospect of riding in what is regarded as the most important race of the year – the Suzuka Eight-Hour.

Brookes rides for Honda's Australian factory team, and its Japanese affiliate is assessing him for the Suzuka enduro at the end of July, possibly in partnership with compatriot Chris Vermeulen.

Vermeulen is already a star in the superbike world championship and finished second in last weekend's round of that series in Valencia, Spain, to yet another Aussie, series leader Troy Corser.

Brookes has long been earmarked for the international stage, but he has been delayed by injuries – a broken pelvis in the middle of last season and a broken collarbone in 2003.

From Bringelly in Sydney's south-west, the same area that US Superbike champion Mat Mladin and world superbike rider Garry McCoy emerged from, the Eastern Creek races will be home rounds for Brookes.

By winning four of the five support races at Australia's world superbike and supersport rounds at Victoria's Phillip Island at the start of April, Brookes heads the national superbike championship by two points from Suzuki's Shawn Giles and the supersport series by 10 from Honda teammate Adam Fergusson.

Fergusson, from Brookfield in Melbourne, is the reigning national champion in both categories, but Brookes is keen to dethrone him this season.

His ultimate aim is MotoGP, but he sees either the world superbike or supersport championships as the stepping stone.

He has fielded offers from many manufacturers in recent years but said he would prefer to stick with Honda.

"Mick Doohan and Wayne Gardner won their world titles in the premier category of motorcycle racing in those days on Honda bikes, so that's good enough for me," Brookes said.

"Even now, Valentino Rossi is winning MotoGP races because he's Rossi, not because of his Yamaha bike.

"The Honda would still be the best bike out there."

Doohan, who won five world titles for Honda, said he had notified Honda that Brookes was somebody they should keep an eye on for the future.

DNF's  oa Anthony Gobert en Daniel Stauffer, Stauffer crashte, waardoor de rode vlag uitging en de race in 2 gedeeltes werd verreden. Beiden kwamen in de 2e race niet meer in actie wegens blessures.

Brookes lag 2e en probeerde in de laatste bocht nog de winst te pakken waardoor hij in het zware zand belandde en zich terug de baan op moest ploegen.

Dan Stauffer heeft enkele breuken aan arm en polsen opgelopen en is langere tijd uitgeschakeld. Of 'the Go Show' ook iets mankeerde heb ik niet zo gauw gelezen.
